Say you have a large shaded area, perhaps between buildings,  underneath a grove of maples, or along a hedgerow or fence. Then say you have irrigation, maybe a downspout, or the dripline off a roof. Finally, say you want to make a lush, green jungle of grasses, grass-likes, and flowers that will obscure all traces of bare ground. This is your kit.

These eight species provide beautiful, dense undergrowth that focuses on foliage with surprise pops of color throughout the season. Don't discount the value of foliage for pollinators - most rely on leaves as an egg-laying substrate and for food in their larval stage, with grasses being of particular importance.

Obviously these plants love shade, but they will also do best in an area sheltered from excessive wind. Some morning sun is fine, but avoid death-ray afternoon sun! These are naturalizers, meaning they will spread via creeping and reseeding to fill your space.

Plant in full  to part shade. Medium to high water. Amending your soil with organic matter such as compost can be helpful for these plants, especially if you are dealing with very sandy, gravelly, or clay soils.

It is important to remove existing grass and weeds either mechanically or via chemicals before you plant plugs. If using chemicals, ensure soil residence time is exceeded before planting. The county extension folks can help with that.

Space plugs 1 to 1.5 feet apart. Water deeply twice a week during the first growing season, and weekly thereafter. Keep area between plants clear of weeds and lawn grass. Plants will come back year after year, and will readily reseed into bare soil!
