This is the iconic bunchgrass prairie that graces so many of our hillsides and valley bottoms, pretty much anywhere it's too droughty for trees to establish. Much of our farmland, rangeland, and developed communities are on former bunchgrass prairie. Let's bring some back!
The backbone of Insta-prairie is the bunchgrass: four species that provide protection and snow-capture for intermingled flowering plants. Bunchgrasses aren't bothered by deer, and they look neat year round. They are complemented by seven species of flowering plants that are drought tolerant and deer resistant, and naturalize readily to fill in between grass tussocks. These species are versatile, and can handle a wide range of elevations and micro-climates.
This kit is a great way to start a restoration of a degraded area, providing a solid native base to which you can continue to add diversity.
Plants are mostly in deep 10 cubic inch plugs and some 7 ci plugs. The only requirements are full sun and well draining soil.
Due to the dynamic nature of growing native plants, we can't guarantee the precise species numbers and makeup of each kit. This helps us keep these kits affordable and available.
Kits will contain at least 10 species from the list below. The grasses will always be included.
Small Kit: 24 plugs covering ~25 - 50 sq ft.
Regular Kit: 49 plugs covering ~50 - 100 sq ft.
Kit contains at least 10 of the following species:
Bluebunch wheatgrass - Psuedoroegneria spicata
Idaho fescue - Festuca idahoensis
Sandberg's bluegrass - Poa secunda (plugs may be dormant if planting in the summer)
Prairie junegrass - Koeleria macrantha
Hairy goldenaster - Heterotheca villosa
Common yarrow - Achillea millefolium
Pussytoes - Antennaria spp. (A. rosea, A. parvifolia, A. neglecta)
Shaggy fleabane - Erigeron pumilis
Spreading fleabane - Erigeron divergens
Blanketflower - Gaillardia aristata
Holboell's rockcress - Arabis holboellii
White prairie aster - Symphyotrichum falcatum
*Species numbers may vary slightly based on availability and seasonality
Bluebunch is the tallest plant reaching 3 or so feet, and pussytoes is the shortest at only a few inches but with flowers that reach 8".
Refer to our plug planting guide for planting instructions.
It is important to remove existing grass and weeds either mechanically or via chemicals before you plant plugs. If using chemicals, ensure soil residence time is exceeded before planting. The county extension folks can help with that.
Space plugs 1 to 2 feet apart. Water deeply every week during the first growing season. Keep area between plants clear of weeds and lawn grass. Plants will come back year after year, and will reseed themselves if bare ground is available.
