If you (like me) are crazy about penstemons, you need to add this one to your garden.
Now, I have to clear up some confusion: we have a yellow penstemon, Penstemon flavescens. This is not that one. This is ANOTHER yellow penstemon. It has smaller flowers and a more slender habit. And to be fair, the flowers are really more cream/ochre than yellow.
Second confusing point, this penstemon is very similar to small-flower penstemon, and when they are seeding, or not flowering, they are very difficult to tell apart. That's how I ended up with it...I collected the seeds thinking they'd be the purple small-flower, but lo and behold the flowers were cream. So if you bought a small-flower penstemon from me in the last year and the flowers were not purple...this is the reason.
BUT: all the amazing aspects of small-flower penstemon apply to this guy: easy to grow and clumping low stature, full sun or part shade, low water, absolutely beautiful, and a pollinator magnet. I highly recommend planting this one with small-flower penstemon for the lovely color contrast (and you may eventually end up with a few pink hybrids...it can happen).
