Photographs don't do these lovely bunchgrasses justice. Green needle grass is elegant and versatile. Sort of a 'little black dress' of plants: everyone should have one or two in the garden. They go with practically everything.
 
 
 
Tall slender leaves surround bright green stems whose arching seedheads shine gold when they catch morning and evening sun. A swath of blooming needle grasses in the right light looks like a river of gold. 
 
 
 
I like needle grass planted with perennials whose blooms appear adrift in a grassy sea: yarrow, twin arnica, wild bergamot, blanketflower, slender cinquefoil and harebell (to name just a few) are the perfect accessories.
