Cinquefoil is named for its five-fingered leaf, in this case dark green with a bright silvery underside. Butter-yellow flowers appear in early-to-mid summer, and a early fall moisture can lead to a second round of blooms. The foliage is fairly low-growing with a tidy compact habit, while the flower stalks reach quite a bit higher. Slender cinquefoil is appropriate for sunny dry and partly shaded sites, and looks nice with blanketflower, yarrow, penstemon (especially wilcox penstemon and small-flower penstemon), and bunchgrasses.

I have successfully grown it in full shade, but to be its most fabulous self, I recommend at least a few hours of direct sun.
