The serviceberry might be our most versatile shrub, thriving in both forest understory and on dry sunny slopes. Elegant white flowers are harbingers of June, and the dark purple berries are beloved by wildlife. Serviceberries have a delicate, open growth form that while multi-stem looks more tree-like than other shrubs. It is appropriate both as an accent plant or part of a thicket planting. They are long-lived, and I have seen some truly majestic specimens with stems over 4 inches in diameter (that's pretty beefy for a shrub).
 
Chokecherry, mock orange, snowberry, ocean spray, and elderberry are suggested companions for a thicket of blooming shrubs that birds and pollinators will love.
