This gorgeous penstemon is endemic to southwest Montana and adjacent Idaho, meaning it is only found there. It is currently a state 'species of concern' due to its limited range in areas heavily impacted by drought, fire suppression, noxious weeds, and overgrazing. I was given a small envelope of seeds from noted local botanist Peter Lesica, and have spent the last few years cultivating a small captive population. Now that my little population is doing well, I'm happy to offer this spectacular plant to others to enjoy.
Lemhi beardtongue is one of our taller penstemons, and extremely showy when in bloom. Large densely clustered blueish purple flowers attract curious bees (and even hummingbirds here in Charlo). The thick evergreen basal leaves are greyish green with an almost glossy overlay. In the wild this species inhabits open sites with very well-drained soil, and is often found growing on road cuts.
Grow with other penstemons for a pollinator buffet. I recommend yellow beardtongue, yellow penstemon, and alberta penstemon for a nice variety of color and foliage. Sandwort and alumroot are also good companions for some contrast.
