Think of these less as dead flower heads and more as mini bird feeders.

Not your average flower. Lacks ray petals, which makes it a cool counterpoint for flowers that have them.

Western coneflower's unique petal-less flowers provide your garden with some interesting visual contrast. This tall streamside species needs moderate irrigation, and appreciates some afternoon shade. Spent flower heads are full of seeds, attracting chickadees and goldfinches. Looks best planted in groups towards the back of a border, especially with canada goldenrod, fireweed, sneezeweed and nettle-leaf giant hyssop.
