Every yard should have a chokecherry. It's a tall, thicket-forming species providing excellent privacy when in leaf. Leaves are large and dark green, turning yellow, red, and every shade between when fall rolls around. Fancy long drooping flower spikes eventually yield strings of deep red cherries that can be turned into delicious wine and jelly. Migrating and over-wintering birds will devour the berries you can't reach. Established chokecherries tolerate substantial drought, but give them a little extra water for a few years to achieve hedge-appropriate height.
