The serviceberry might be our most versatile shrub, thriving in both forest understory and on dry sunny slopes. Elegant white flowers are harbingers of June, and the dark purple berries are beloved by wildlife. Serviceberries take on a delicate tree-like shape, appropriate as an accent plant or part of a thicket planting. Chokecherry, mock orange, ocean spray, and elderberry are suggested companions for a thicket of blooming shrubs that birds and pollinators will love.
