You are probably aware that traditional grass lawns don't add any value for pollinators. If you have an irrigated patch of grass, why not add a pollinator oasis? This kit is designed to provide an island of flowers in an irrigated lawn setting, and attract a wide range of pollinators (especially butterflies).

The pollinator oasis is a feral, madly blooming riot of flowers that will fill the allotted space with color. These seven species are some of our better naturalizers, meaning they are good at reseeding, and will take advantage of the extra irrigation to bloom big and bloom long. This isn't your grandma's neat and tidy perennial garden, but it will have a big impact on your native pollinator community.

These species are vigorous and will fill their allotted space. That said, they will not outcompete lawn grass, and can be mowed (so if you really want to contain them, that's how). Also great for ditchside restoration.

Plants are mostly in deep 10 cubic inch plugs and some 7 ci plugs. Full sun or partial shade with at least weekly deep irrigation. If lawn grew there, these guys can too.

Due to the dynamic nature of growing native plants, we can't guarantee the precise species numbers and makeup of each kit. This helps us keep these kits affordable and available.

Kits will contain at least 6 species from the list below.

Small Kit: 24 plugs covering ~50 sq ft.

Regular Kit: 49 plugs covering ~100 sq ft.

Kit contains at least 6 of these species:

Wild bergamot - Monarda fistulosa

Nettleleaf giant hyssop - Agastache urticifolia

Black-eyed susan - Rudbeckia hirta

Blue vervain - Verbena hastata

Pearly everlasting - Anaphalis margaritaceae

Showy milkweed - Asclepias speciosa

Western columbine - Aquilegia formosa

Nuttal's sunflower - Helianthus nuttallii

Blue vervain and milkweed are the tallest, topping out at 3 or so feet, and bergamot is the shortest at around 18". So it's a tall, bold bunch.

Refer to our plug planting guide for planting instructions.

It is important to remove existing grass and weeds either mechanically or via chemicals before you plant plugs. If using chemicals, ensure soil residence time is exceeded before planting. The county extension folks can help with that.

Remove or smother ~ 50 - 100 sq ft of lawn, and space plugs 2 feet apart. Water deeply every week during the growing season. Keep area between plants clear of weeds and lawn grass. Plants will come back year after year, and will readily reseed!
