This bunchgrass is a valuable wildlife and restoration species, providing browse to deer and elk and protein-packed millet-like seeds to rodents and birds.
The foliage is fairly standard for a bunchgrass (thin bright green blades), but the open flower head, each flower developing a plump round seed, is quite attractive.
This species requires very well drained soil. It particularly loves growing in sand dunes, but any sandy or gravelly soil will do. Plant en masse or as a prairie planting with hairy goldenaster, white prairie aster, fringed sage, and bluebunch wheatgrass.
