Prairie smoke, a versatile grassland and woodland flower, is aptly named for its wispy smoke-like seedheads. Long-lasting red to pink flowers shaped like curious upturned urns and plume-like leaves provide unique character. Prairie smoke can tolerate substantial drought by going dormant (complete with shriveling leaves) and then reemerging, phoenix-like, as soon as the soil moisture is sufficient. Grow with alumroot, small-flower penstemon, pussytoes, and twin arnica.
